I have felt majorly stuck two times in my life. First time was after having my first child and realizing, as an advertising professional, I couldn’t have it all. Second was when I was at my last job. I didn’t feel I was going anywhere or making an impact. I wanted to make a move but the promise of a predictable paycheck and fantastic healthcare kept me in it. It wasn’t until I lost my job that I made a major move professionally. I took it as a sign.
Being the breadwinner kept me in a job going nowhere for years longer than I should have stayed. It felt selfish at the time for me to put my job satisfaction/enjoyment ahead of the responsibilities of my family. Fast forward – got laid off, started my own company, now make more than I did in that job…and love what I do. It often makes me wonder where I would be if I had left earlier. I think the responsibilities we carry so often can become our biggest limitations.
My confidence was hit hard this year with my job situation. I’m looking for my next role. It’s a tough market and along with confidence, age is also a factor. I’m trying to stay hopeful and to keep forging forward!
