My husband and I talk constantly about how long we want to support our kids. My middle is looking at 6-figure universities and is entertaining medical school – and she’s one of three kids we need to get through school and possible post-grad. In our culture, families are responsible for their children’s education, but these dollar signs and our desire to retire on time may be in conflict.
I think it is not 100% a parent’s responsibility to fund their childrens’ educations. In fact, when a student has to take out a loan or get a job to help with educational expenses they may take their education more seriously. Many students take out loans, and while time intensive, there are good scholarships out there – even for non-athletes!! Also, set the stage that your child apply to schools that are within the price range you are comfortable with. I don’t think you should sacrifice your retirement for their educations. Both are possible!!
